Timothy Hudspeth

35 years old · died January 21, 2020 · Mississippi State Penitentiary, Sunflower County, Mississippi

Timothy Hudspeth was 35 when he died in January 2020 while held in Unit 30 at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman. The Mississippi Department of Corrections said he was killed during a fight with other people held there, and the Sunflower County coroner said he appeared to have died of blunt-force trauma. A witness said the assault lasted hours and that his body was not found until days later, during a wellness check. The witness also said officials did not investigate at the time, and the department has not provided the investigation report on the death.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed; neglect alleged). MDOC said he was killed in a fight with other inmates and the coroner said he died of blunt-force trauma, but a witness says the assault lasted hours and his body was found days later during a wellness check, and the witness says officials did not investigate at the time, so the account of the death is contested.

Reported by: Mississippi Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); Sunflower County Coroner Heather Burton (medical examiner or coroner); a witness.
