Tim Riley
Tim Riley, 31, grew up in small agricultural towns outside Boise, the fourth of eight boys, and his parents remember him as a generally happy child. He was held at the Canyon County Jail in Idaho, where he was found dead in a shower on June 23, 2023, after taking a knotted bedsheet, and a coroner ruled the death a suicide. His wife, Paula, says she repeatedly asked deputies to check on him and to get him mental health care in the period before his death, and that the jail did not notify her; she learned of it from his mother. An InvestigateWest review of jail video found that deputy security checks in the hour before his death lasted less than a minute each, though the logs listed three to five minutes. His family says the jail has not answered their questions about what happened.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). The coroner ruled it suicide, but his wife Paula says deputies ignored her repeated requests to check on him and get him mental health care, and an InvestigateWest review found deputy checks lasted under a minute while the logs listed three to five minutes.
Reported by: coroner; InvestigateWest (reporters); his wife, Paula (family or their lawyers).
