Executed
Thompson
Thompson, a Black man, was hanged on the outskirts of Newberry, South Carolina, on March 10, 1876, before a large crowd. The New York Herald reported that he was brought from the jail in a cart, smoked a cigar before going to the scaffold, and spoke briefly there of hoping to meet his friends again in heaven. He prayed with a minister before the drop. The paper reported that physicians found a pulse some time after he fell. No one claimed his body, and it was given over for dissection.
