Thomas Underhill
Thomas Underhill was held at the Utah State Correctional Facility when he became seriously ill over about ten days in November 2022. His mother, who brought a lawsuit against the Utah Department of Corrections, said he called her in distress, begging for help, and that he repeatedly asked for medical care and reported severe pain. The lawsuit says he was not seen by a medical practitioner at the facility before he was taken to the hospital too late, and that his death was preventable. He was pronounced dead at University of Utah Hospital on November 17, 2022. The autopsy, as reported in the lawsuit, attributed his death to an infection that began in his left kidney and spread through his body; the Department of Corrections declined to comment, citing pending litigation.
