Thomas Reynolds
Thomas Reynolds was held at the Colorado penitentiary in Canon City. In January 1900, after he was recaptured at Florence, officers were bringing him back to the prison when a mob of several hundred men took him from them near the First Street bridge. The men hanged him from a telephone pole just outside the prison walls. Accounts differ on how the officers responded: one says they were overpowered and disarmed, another says they gave him up, and the warden is said to have had no guards who could have stopped the crowd. No inquest was held.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob overpowered the officers escorting Thomas Reynolds back to the Canon City penitentiary and hanged him from a telegraph or telephone pole near the prison.
Reported by: Denver Republican (reporters); San Francisco Call (reporters); Gilpin Observer (reporters).
