Died in jail or a lockup
Thomas Lilliard
Tom Lylliard, a Black man, was being held in the Woodbury jail in Tennessee in late June 1892. A special dispatch from Murfreesboro reported that a mob came to the jail and demanded the keys from the jailer, who handed them over without resistance. The mob took Tom Lylliard to a bridge over Stone River and hanged him there. The dispatch said his neck was broken and that he died without a struggle.
