Thomas Allison
Thomas Allison worked in the tobacco business in Mt. Airy. On the night of September 12, 1892, about twenty masked men came to the Surry County jail in Dobson, North Carolina, saying they had a prisoner, overpowered the jailer and took the key to his cell. They took Allison out in his night clothes, and he was found hanged from a white oak about two miles from Dobson the next morning. A coroner's inquest was held, and the body was to be sent to his people at Statesville. The Richmond Dispatch correspondent reports that little regret was expressed and that no member of the mob was identified, though horse tracks and horses taken from local stables were found.
