Teka Gulema
Teka Gulema, an Ethiopian migrant, was held at the Etowah County Detention Center in Gadsden, Alabama, when he developed a bacterial tooth infection. According to Human Rights Watch and the ACLU, as cited by Refinery29, the infection spread through his body and left him paralyzed. ICE released him in November 2015 while he was still hospitalized, and he died about two months later, in January 2016. Those groups say ICE did not investigate his death.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (neglect alleged). Human Rights Watch and the ACLU say an untreated bacterial tooth infection spread through his body and left him paralyzed, after he was held at the Etowah County Detention Center without adequate dental care.
