Tasha Grant

39 years old · died May 5, 2025 · MetroHealth Medical Center, Cuyahoga County, Ohio

Tasha Grant, 39, was a double leg amputee. Her partner, Marcellus Potter, said she could be kind when stable, and her brother, Andre Grant, said he loved her and misses her. She was held at the Cuyahoga County Jail and taken to MetroHealth Medical Center on May 2, 2025, for chest pain linked to a preexisting condition. On May 5, body camera video shows officers and a sheriff's deputy restraining her on a hospital bed while she repeatedly said she could not breathe, and about 14 minutes after officers left the room, staff found her unresponsive. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide caused by restraint with congestive heart failure, which the office said does not mean anyone acted wrongfully; the family's attorneys say the restraint caused her death, and the sheriff's department and MetroHealth dispute responsibility for her custody and restraint.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff (disputed; neglect alleged). The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide from physical restraint with congestive heart failure, while the family's attorneys say officers suffocated her and staff did not render aid, and two outside medical experts questioned whether staff monitored her vital signs and whether a sedative contributed.

Reported by: Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner (medical examiner or coroner); Grant family attorneys Stan Jackson and Robert Gresham (family or their lawyers); two outside medical experts; Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department (the agency that held her).

Lawsuit: Her family filed a federal civil lawsuit over her death, which is pending, after a grand jury in July 2026 declined to indict three MetroHealth security officers and a sheriff's deputy.
