Tarpey

died March 16, 1873 · prison at Monterey, Monterey County, California

Tarpey was held in the jail at Monterey, California, in March 1873. A crowd of armed men from Salinas, reported at several hundred, broke into the jail and took him out, and according to one account the sheriff, Wasson, was seized and bound after reading a judge's dispatch asking that Tarpey be kept in Monterey, while another account says the jail guards offered no resistance. The mob drove him about three miles from town and hanged him from a tree, and the sources say several men fired pistols into his body. His wife, mother and sister, who lived near the jail, begged the crowd not to harm him, and one report says he was well known in San Francisco.
