Stewart
Stewart, described in one account as a mere boy, was held at the jail at Deadwood, South Dakota. Capt. A. W. Barrett, recalling the events in an interview with a Washington Star reporter, said vigilantes took him from the jail and hanged him from a rafter of a new jail addition, with another man, as a warning to others. Barrett said Stewart's wounds had reopened during the rough handling and that he begged to be allowed to send one word to his mother, who was in the east.
