Stewart Roger Staton
Stewart Roger Staton, 49, of Greenville, died on New Year's Day 2026 while held at the Pitt County Detention Center. The Pitt County Sheriff's Office said he was placed in a shared cell hours before his cellmate reported a medical emergency. Detention officers entered the cell, called for medical help and began aid, but he died. The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the death at the sheriff's request, and the manner and cause of death have not yet been determined.
