Died in prison
Steven Newell
Steven Newell was 23 years old, from Calhoun County, and his sister said he was due to come home that February. In July 2012, he was stabbed early in the morning at Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer. He was pronounced dead in the prison's health unit, according to a report by the Equal Justice Initiative.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody. The Equal Justice Initiative report says another inmate stabbed him during an altercation.
