Steven Gomez
Steven Gomez was 20 years old and left behind a daughter who was four months old when he died. His mother, Amy Gomez, says she talks to him every day in her mind and misses his voice, his hugs, his kindness and his generosity. A lawsuit brought by his family, through attorney Sean Guy, says he ingested drugs in the back of a police car and was taken to jail rather than a hospital, though officers had found an empty baggie and pill bottle in the car. The lawsuit says he began having symptoms within 24 hours of being taken in and died a few days after being resuscitated, and the family says the officers and intake staff had not been trained on their own policies.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (neglect alleged). His family's lawsuit, brought by attorney Sean Guy, says officers and jail intake staff took him to jail instead of a hospital in violation of policy, and that they had not been trained on those policies.
Reported by: lawsuit and attorney Sean Guy (family or their lawyers).
Lawsuit: His family sued over his death, and attorney Sean Guy represents them; no settlement or award amount has been reported.
