Steven Galack

46 years old · died 2012 · Tennessee

Steven Galack, 46, had moved to Florida for a fresh start and was living with his mother in Delray Beach; his ex-wife Kristin described him as a father, a brother and a son who was loved by many. He was held in the Palm Beach County Jail and was then picked up by a private transport company on July 30, 2012, to be taken to Ohio. When the van reached Tennessee, he had no pulse. The medical examiner could not determine a cause of death, and the family's lawsuit alleges that guards beat him and withheld his medication during the trip, while other passengers said he deteriorated along the way. The family blames Prison Transportation Services of America, which the lawsuit says settled confidentially and which did not respond to requests for comment.

Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined (disputed; neglect alleged). The medical examiner could not determine the cause of death, per the death certificate, while the Galack family's lawsuit alleges guards beat him and withheld his medication during the transport.

Reported by: Medical examiner (death certificate) (medical examiner or coroner); the Galack family's lawsuit (family or their lawyers).

Lawsuit: His family sued Prison Transportation Services of America over his death and settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed, confidential amount.
