Steven Duran

died April 12, 2017 · Orange County, California

Steven Duran died on April 12, 2017, while held in Orange County jail custody in California, according to the ACLU of Southern California. The ACLU says he was hurt in 2013 when he fell getting off a sheriff's bus while handcuffed, and that he repeatedly filed grievances and medical requests for treatment of his rib and shoulder injuries and for pain management. He represented himself in court, and the ACLU describes him as a man desperately trying to access medical care. The ACLU says he did not have surgery for a rotator cuff tear until December 2014, and that he sued the sheriff's department and health provider in 2015 but lost the case.

Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined (neglect alleged). The ACLU of Southern California says Duran's death followed four years of medical neglect, including ignored rib and shoulder injuries from a 2013 fall and surgery for a rotator cuff tear not done until December 2014.

Reported by: ACLU of Southern California (advocates).
