Died in prison

Steven Benson

63 years old · died July 3, 2015 · Taylor Correctional Institution, Taylor County, Florida

Steven Benson, 63, was held at Taylor Correctional Institution in Florida, where he was stabbed in the head in July 2015. He died of complications of the head wound, which the medical examiner listed as delayed complications of sharp force trauma, and his daughter Victoria Benson later asked that his remains be cremated and sent to her home in Maryland. Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigators said the attack was orchestrated by other prisoners, and Benson told staff that two men had jumped him. The Department of Corrections has recorded the manner of death as homicide, while an earlier state inspector general review had listed it as pending and had not ruled out suicide.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed). FDLE investigators say fellow inmates killed him in an orchestrated attack over an extortion demand, while Benson told staff two men jumped him; the Florida Department of Corrections recorded the manner as homicide.

Reported by: Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigators (outside investigators); Florida Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); Steven Benson.
