Steve Henley

died February 4, 2009 · Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, Tennessee

Steve Henley was executed by lethal injection at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Tennessee in the early hours of February 4, 2009, after his appeals were exhausted. He maintained until the end that he was innocent of the crime for which he had been sentenced to die, a claim that is an objection to the execution rather than a finding. Warden Ricky Bell pronounced him dead at 1:33 a.m. Central time. His adult children, Leanne and Gregory, and his sister, Stephanie Worley, watched from the viewing room, and before the drugs took effect he talked with family while his spiritual adviser of ten years led them in the Lord's Prayer. His family said he died smiling, and his son read a statement forgiving the state.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. Henley maintained that he was not guilty of the 1985 killings until the end.

Reported by: Warden Ricky Bell, Riverbend Maximum Security Institution (the agency that held him). The only account of how this person died comes from the agency that held him.
