Stephen Smith died on June 4, 2020, while held at the Michael Unit, a Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison in Anderson County, according to a state attorney general custodial death report. A local news report later stated that the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said Stephen Lewis Smith had previously tested positive for COVID-19 and that medical evidence suggested the virus contributed to his death.
