Stephen Maxwell

69 years old · died April 26, 2020 · Sumter Correctional Institution, Sumter County, Florida

A longtime friend described Stephen as a man who had changed greatly over the decades and posed no threat to anyone, and said he kept to himself at Sumter Correctional Institution while caring for the stray cats around the facility. Stephen was 69 when he died there in Bushnell, Florida, on April 26, 2020. The District 5 Medical Examiner's Office said he died of complications of COVID-19, and the Orlando Sentinel reported that his death was among the first linked to the virus in the Florida prison system. The friend said the state parole commission had indicated he would likely be released in December 2020, before it declined to grant parole at the time of his review. The Florida Department of Corrections recorded the manner of death as natural.
