Stephen Baptist, a Black man, was hanged at Boydton, the county seat of Mecklenburg County, Virginia, on July 10, 1900. He had been held in the jail at Petersburg and was brought to Boydton under heavy guard. According to the Alexandria Gazette, several attempts were made to lynch him before the execution.
