Stephanie Ann Melton, 40, was being held at the Kitsap County Jail in Washington when she was found unresponsive in her housing unit on December 13, 2021. The sheriff's office said an officer tried lifesaving measures until medics arrived, and she was taken to St. Michael Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Kitsap County Coroner Jeff Wallis said an autopsy found she died of peritonitis caused by a ruptured gastric ulcer and classified the death as natural. The sheriff's office said the death is being investigated by the Kitsap Critical Incident Response Team.
