Star Daley
Star Daley was held in the Phoenix jail in May 1917, and deputy sheriffs moved him out at midnight after hearing of a plan to storm the jail. According to a coroner's jury report, about four hours later a mob of fifty or more men captured the party on the Apache Trail in Pinal County and hanged him. The coroner's jury found the death justifiable homicide by persons unknown, and county officials said they would not prosecute unless the governor directed them to. Other accounts place the hanging elsewhere: one Phoenix item says it was near Mesa after a chase of about forty miles, and another says he was taken from deputies on the road to the state penitentiary at Florence and hanged from a telephone pole about 18 miles east of Phoenix.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A coroner's jury ruled it justifiable homicide by persons unknown, while a Phoenix newspaper item says a mob of fifty or more men took him from officers and hanged him.
Reported by: Coroner's jury, Pinal County (medical examiner or coroner); County Attorney Richardson; Phoenix newspaper item quoted in the Laredo Weekly Times (reporters); newspaper report on Daly's hanging (reporters).
