Died in jail or a lockup
Stanley
Stanley, a Black man, was held in the Temple, Texas, jail in July 1915 when a crowd of about 5,000 people took him from custody on a Friday night. According to the Marble Hill Press, he was put into a fire on the public square, a shot may have been fired, and his body was later dragged out and hanged from a telephone pole. Officers and relatives asked that guilt be established before any violence was done, and several men said he had confessed, a claim the article reports only as theirs.
