Spiros “Sam” Fonseca
Spiros "Sam" Fonseca, 26, was an El Cajon native whose mother, Pam Fonseca, and sister, Sharron Fonseca Roberts, spoke publicly about him, and his sister said she last spoke with him on June 5. He was held at the San Diego Central Jail, where he was found unresponsive in his cell on June 9, 2020, and he died about four hours later at UC San Diego Medical Center. The San Diego sheriff's office said he died by suicide, and his mother said a death certificate states he hanged himself with a towel from an upper bunk.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). The sheriff's office and his mother, citing a death certificate, say he hanged himself with a towel; his mother's account of the death certificate does not allege neglect, so the note relies on the reported suicide claim only.
Reported by: San Diego sheriff's office (the agency that held him); Pam Fonseca, his mother, citing a death certificate (family or their lawyers).
