Bon Lovett

died August 15, 1913 · Calhoun County Jail, Calhoun County, Georgia

Bon Lovett, a Black man, was held in the Morgan County jail in Calhoun County, Georgia, awaiting a murder trial set to begin the day the Brunswick News reported on the case. According to that account, a group of about a hundred masked men entered the jail in the early morning of August 15, 1913, overpowered Sheriff W. L. Calhoun to take the keys, and shot Lovett in his cell. The sheriff was choked unconscious and cut during the attack, and the paper reported that the mob left in an orderly manner. A Dawson News account, which gives the jail as Calhoun County's and describes about fifty men, says a guard of twelve had been posted and that the deputy in charge was overpowered before Lovett was shot through the bars of his cell, and that the judge's appeal to the mob had no effect.
