Snap Curry

26 years old · died May 6, 1922 · bank at Wortham used to hold him, Freestone County, Texas

Snap Curry, a Black man, worked as a farm hand on the King farm near Kirvin, Texas, one of three men employed there. He was being held by officers when a mob came for him on the morning of May 6, 1922, and burned him at an iron stake in Kirvin. An Associated Press dispatch from Mexia says he was held in a bank at Wortham, where officers tried to move him by automobile and gave him up when resistance seemed useless. Another paper places him in the Fairfield county jail and says Sheriff H. M. Mayo tried to reason with the crowd before he was taken outside at gunpoint while the mob took the men. Authorities said there would probably be no early grand jury inquiry into the killing.
