Sloan Despano
Sloan Despain, also recorded as Sloan Despano, was one of three men taken from the jail in Greensburg, Kentucky, on November 10, 1858, by a crowd. According to a Louisville Journal letter from Campbellsville, reprinted in other papers, the crowd bound the men, marched them away and hanged them from an elm tree. The letter says the men protested their innocence, and it describes his death as harder than that of Saul Thompson, who was taken in the same way. The spelling of his name varies across the reports, and the accounts are from newspapers of the time.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A Louisville Journal correspondent's letter, reprinted in the Richmond Enquirer, says a mob took Sloan Despain from the Greensburg, Kentucky jail and hanged him from an elm tree.
