Simeon Reno

died December 12, 1868 · Floyd County Jail, Floyd County, Indiana

Simon Reno was held in the Floyd County jail in New Albany, Indiana, when a mob broke in before dawn on December 12, 1868. Accounts differ on how the men got in: one says they took the keys from the jail office, another says from the sheriff's bedroom, and another says a guard was forced to unlock the cells. The Wheeling Daily Intelligencer reported that the sheriff was shot through the arm, and the men took Simon from his cell and hanged him at the jail's iron railing beside his brother Frank before leaving town. One report places the jail at Seymour rather than New Albany.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A masked mob took Simeon Reno from the New Albany jail and hanged him from the cell railing beside his brother Frank, according to the Cincinnati Times and the telegraph dispatch.
