Executed
Silas Hampton
Silas Hampton, a Chickasaw man, was held in the jail at Fort Smith, Arkansas, under a federal court sentence and was hanged there on October 7, 1887, alongside Seaborn Green. Rev. J. C. Massey, a Methodist minister, read the service with him, and Hampton told those present that he had made his peace with God and was ready to die. Newspaper accounts report that both men's necks broke and that they died with little struggle before about 150 people. This execution was carried out under the federal court's sentence.
