Sherman Weakley
Sherman Weakley, 22, died at the Shelby County Jail in Memphis in early February 2025. Staff found him unresponsive outside his cell, and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said the autopsy classified his death as a suicide. Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner, announcing the death, called it one of the saddest cases he had seen and said Weakley's mental health issues were tied more to his upbringing in Memphis than to the jail. The sheriff's office's account of the death is the only one the sources give.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). The Shelby County Sheriff's Office autopsy attributed his death to suicide, and the sheriff's office says so in its announcement, but the family or other sources have not been reported as disputing this account.
Reported by: Shelby County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); Shelby County Sheriff's Office autopsy (medical examiner or coroner).
