Died in prison

Sheqweetta Vaughan

32 years old · died July 9, 2025 · Arrendale State Prison, Habersham County, Georgia

Sheqweetta Vaughan, 32, was a mother who had given birth to a baby boy in January 2025, and family and the advocacy group Motherhood Beyond Bars remember her as funny, engaged, and hopeful about the future. She was found dead in her segregation cell at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto, Georgia, in July 2025, with the coroner describing a strong odor of decay and a very hot, poorly ventilated cell. A neighboring prisoner said she called for medical help around 6 a.m. on July 8 and got no response, and advocates and family say she may have been dead for at least two days, while the prison's timeline of checks conflicts with that account. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Georgia Department of Corrections have not determined a cause or manner of death, and the cause remains pending autopsy and toxicology results.

Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined (disputed; neglect alleged). The GBI could not determine the cause or manner of death and the state prison system believes it was natural pending autopsy, while advocates say her death was preventable given her mental health needs and the heat in her segregation cell, and her family says she had likely been dead for at least two days and disputes the prison's welfare-check timeline.

Reported by: Georgia Bureau of Investigation (outside investigators); Georgia Department of Corrections (the agency that held her); Habersham County Deputy Coroner Kenneth Franklin (medical examiner or coroner); advocates; family.
