Shannon Jennings

died July 29, 2021 · Rockingham-Harrisonburg Regional Jail, City of Harrisonburg County, Virginia

Shannon Jennings was a father of four who had planned to marry his fiancée, Chelsea Mullins, and who cared for her daughter as his own; his family remembers him as generous, devoted to his children, and a help to his father during cancer treatment. He was held pretrial at the Rockingham-Harrisonburg Regional Jail and died there on July 29, 2021, the day of a scheduled court hearing about his release. The Virginia State Police and the medical examiner's office said he died by suicide in a cell by himself, and state police said they found nothing suspicious. Mullins disputes that account, questioning the three to four hours between his hearing and his death, a smeared camera lens, and why no one was watching the camera and she was not shown the security video.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). The medical examiner's office and Virginia State Police say he died by suicide in a cell by himself, but his fiancée, Chelsea Mullins, disputes that account, questions the three to four hours between his hearing and his death, and says no one was watching the camera.

Reported by: Virginia State Police (outside investigators); Tracie Cooper, administrator at the medical examiner's office (medical examiner or coroner); Chelsea Mullins, his fiancée (family or their lawyers).
