Shane Varaiya
Shane Varaiya was 35 and was held at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas, in Santa Clara County, California. Santa Clara County sheriff's officials said deputies found him unconscious and not breathing at the base of an outside barrack stairway early on June 20, 2017. Jail medical staff took him to a hospital, where he died that afternoon. Investigators are still considering whether he jumped from the second-story stairwell or fell accidentally, and surveillance cameras did not capture the fall, so the manner of his death remains pending.
