Segundo Mejia Escobar, a 50-year-old Hispanic man also known as Juan Hernandez, died on March 18, 2022, at the Central Detention Facility in Washington, D.C., while in the custody of the D.C. Department of Corrections. The D.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner attributed his death to hypertensive and arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease and ruled the manner of death natural. A September 2022 DCist report, citing the medical examiner's office, gave the cause as heart disease and the month of death as March 2022.
