Segundo Gamboy Guaranda

33 years old · died April 16, 2026 · New Haven Correctional Center, New Haven, Connecticut

Segundo Gamboy Guaranda, 33, came to the United States from Ecuador about two years before his death to find work, cleaning rooms at a university in New Haven, and left a wife and three children in Ecuador; his attorney, William Gerace, called him a decent individual. On April 16, 2026, a correction officer found him hanging in his cell at the New Haven Correctional Center, and he was pronounced dead at a hospital. The medical examiner's office ruled the death a suicide, and the inspector general found that the Department of Correction had been negligent in monitoring his cell, including an officer who did not check on him after a sign was left in his window and who falsely logged required tours. The inspector general found no criminal responsibility, while his family and lawyer said they had been worried about his mental state before his death, and his brother Wilson said he was shocked and would never have suspected him of taking his own life.

The medical examiner ruled it a suicide by hanging, and the inspector general found no criminal responsibility, but the inspector general found a correction officer did not check on him after a sign was left in his window and falsely logged required tours, and his family's attorney says they had worried about his mental state.

Reported by: Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (medical examiner or coroner); Office of the Inspector General (outside investigators); Department of Correction (the agency that held him); his family's attorney (family or their lawyers); his brother.
