Seabright

died October 8, 1905 · Decatur County, Georgia

Tom Seabwright, a Black man, was being taken to the jail in Bainbridge, Georgia, by two county officers in early October 1905. A crowd of more than fifty men surrounded the officers and demanded that he be handed over, and the officers gave him up, according to the Los Angeles Herald, while the New-York Tribune reports that the officers said they tried to protect him but were outnumbered. The mob hanged him from a tree and shot his body hundreds of times, and the coroner cut him down the following day or that evening, the accounts differ. The sources disagree over whether the officers resisted.
