Scott Strieter
Scott Strieter, 33, was held at the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility in California for about twelve days in September 2023, according to his family. His family describes him as fun-loving, goofy, smart and selfless, the glue between his siblings and a wide circle of friends, who helped build trails, an olive grove and a home on the family's Occidental property. The sheriff's office said he died by suicide, having hanged himself in a jail cell. His family says he was in a mental health crisis and that lockdowns, cancelled visits, limited phone access and delayed mental health care contributed to his death, and they have sued the county and Wellpath, the jail's medical contractor. The sheriff's office said only that it sends its condolences.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). His family's lawsuit says he was in a mental health crisis and that jail staff and Wellpath failed to provide timely mental health care while he was held in restrictive conditions.
Reported by: Strieter family, through their lawsuit against the county and Wellpath (family or their lawyers).
Lawsuit: His family sued Sonoma County and its jail medical contractor Wellpath over his death, and no settlement or award amount has been reported.
