Saxon Rodriguez
Saxon Fredrick Rodriguez, 22, died on July 20, 2021, while held at the San Diego Central Jail, known as the Men's Central Jail, in downtown San Diego. His sister, Sabrina Weddle, and his mother, Sundee Weddle, have spoken publicly about his death and pressed for answers. The Sheriff's Department said the cause was a fentanyl and methamphetamine overdose, and the family says deputies checked on him later than state law requires and that the Sheriff's Department has not been open with them about video of his death. A county civilian review board investigation found that checks on him were 65 minutes apart, longer than the 60 minutes state law requires, and that it was unclear how the drugs got into the facility.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (neglect alleged). Sabrina Weddle says deputies did not perform regular checks on him, and the county civilian review board found checks were 65 minutes apart, longer than the 60 minutes state law requires.
Reported by: Sundee Weddle and Sabrina Weddle (family) (family or their lawyers); San Diego County Civilian Law Enforcement Review Board (outside investigators); news reporting on the death.
