Sanders
Sanders was one of three men held in the Chicot County jail at Lake Village, Arkansas, in late 1871. According to the Morning Republican, citing county assessor Conway Barbour, a crowd of Black residents who feared the men would be freed went to the jail, took them out and shot them. A later Morning Republican report, reprinting the Jefferson Republican, says a crowd of several hundred demanded the keys from the sheriff, who was ill at home, and that his wife handed them over before the men were shot a short distance behind the town. The Opelousas Journal says the sheriff gave up the keys and the mob took Sanders from his cell and shot him in the woods.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). The Morning Republican, citing county assessor Conway Barbour, says a crowd of Black residents took Sanders from the Lake Village jail and shot him; a Jefferson Republican account reprinted in the Morning Republican disputes this, saying the sheriff's wife handed over the keys and the crowd shot the prisoners behind the town, while the Opelousas Journal says an armed mob took him from his cell and shot him in the woods.
Reported by: Hon. Conway Barbour, assessor of Chicot County, as relayed by the Morning Republican; Jefferson Republican, reprinted in the Morning Republican (reporters); The Opelousas Journal (reporters).
