Samuel Ramsey
Sam Ramey was held in the jail at Owingsville, Kentucky, in September 1881. Newspaper accounts from that month report that a mob took him from the jail and hanged him near the town, most likely on the night of September 11. One dispatch says the mob was masked, and another says it was armed. Some accounts say the mob came for him after he had been jailed in connection with the killing of a young farmer, a claim the papers made without verification.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A brief 1881 dispatch reports that a mob took Sam Ramey from the Owingsville jail and hanged him; the accounts give no detail on how the mob entered or whether jail staff resisted.
Reported by: Louisville dispatch reported in the Daily Los Angeles Herald (reporters); Louisville dispatch to the Chicago Tribune (reporters); The Sentinel-Democrat retrospective column (reporters); The Silver State newspaper report (reporters).
