Died in jail or a lockup
Sam Fleming
Sam Fleming, a Black man, had lived in Pine Bluff for many years, where he worked at the Elks' club rooms and had a number of relatives, including one or two brothers. The Pine Bluff Daily Graphic reported that early on May 6, 1907, about twenty-five masked men took him from the city lockup at McGehee in Desha County, where he was being held, and hanged him from a tree limb. Other papers said the killing was so quiet that people nearby did not know of it. The Pine Bluff paper said his body had not been cut down by the time it went to print.
