Sam Dyer

died June 9, 1885 · Bonham jail, Fannin County, Texas

Sam Dyer and his brother Eli were held in the jail at Bonham, Texas, in June 1885. According to a Texas report carried by the Savannah Morning News, a masked mob of about 100 men woke the jailer at gunpoint and demanded the keys, and the jailer handed them over. The mob took Sam from his cell, carried him a few hundred yards and hanged him from a tree, and the report gave strangulation as the cause of death. One account places the killing at Pottsboro rather than Bonham, and the accounts differ on that point.
