Sallie Leyton
Sallie Leyton was one of three people held in the Carroll County jail at Carrollton, Mississippi, when a mob broke into the building on the afternoon of August 1, 1901, took them out and hanged them, according to a New Orleans Picayune report carried by the Associated Press. The report says the three had been committed to jail by a coroner's jury. Another Picayune dispatch from Winona reports that Governor Longino was reported to have travelled to Carrollton by special train but arrived too late to prevent the killings. Rumors at the time said others might be lynched.
