Died in jail or a lockup
Sage Bush
Sag Bush was held in the Decatur, Illinois jail when a mob broke through the outer door and the cell cage in the early morning of June 3, 1893. The men took him from the jail and hanged him from a telegraph pole nearby. The guards said they did not have the keys, and the jail had extra guards posted because of earlier threats, though The Herald reported that no resistance was made. Two doctors pronounced him dead within minutes. Governor Altgeld offered a reward for the apprehension and conviction of those responsible.
