Sadler was held in the jail at Springfield, Tennessee, when a mob broke in, took them from the jail and hanged them. A Springfield newspaper reported that the crowd came while townspeople were asleep. The paper said the sheriff saw no familiar faces among the crowd. The paper denies that residents took part, although a widely held belief in the town said they did.
