Sabe Stewart

died May 13, 1897 · Rosebud jail, Falls County, Texas

Sabe Stewart was one of three men held in the Rosebud jail in Texas. On the night of May 13, 1897, guards refused a masked mob's demand for the prisoners, and officers then moved the three men out of town by bus. The mob overtook the officers, seized the men and hanged them from a tree about three miles east of Rosebud. Accounts differ on the size of the mob, with estimates ranging from 100 to 1,000 men. The sheriff said nothing had yet been learned about who made up the mob, and an inquest was opened.
