Ryan Michael Bain

31 years old · died October 12, 2010 · Yellowstone County Detention Facility, Yellowstone County, Montana

Ryan Michael Bain, 31, of Billings, died in October 2010 after being held at the Yellowstone County Detention Facility. Staff used a Taser on him again at the jail and placed him in a restraint chair, and he later became unresponsive. He died two days later at St. Vincent Healthcare. A coroner's inquest jury found that he died of an accidental overdose of methamphetamine, while the death certificate, signed by Coroner Bill Jones, lists excited delirium as the primary cause and a violent struggle as a secondary cause; experts dispute that diagnosis. His family attended the inquest hearing.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (disputed). The coroner's inquest jury found an accidental methamphetamine overdose, while the death certificate signed by Coroner Bill Jones lists excited delirium as the primary cause and a violent struggle as secondary.

Reported by: Yellowstone County Coroner Bill Jones (medical examiner or coroner); Coroner's inquest jury (court).
