Ryan Hagerman
Ryan Hagerman, 34, was held in a shared cell at the Macomb County Jail in Mount Clemens in 2014. The sheriff's office said his cellmate attacked him on May 28, 2014, and that guards saw the assault on closed-circuit video; Hagerman was treated at the jail and then taken to a hospital, where he died on June 19. Surveillance video was said to show the assault lasting nearly two minutes before a deputy entered the cell, and his family's attorney and the sheriff disagree over whether jail policy was followed. His mother, Debbie Hagerman, said she wants the sheriff to acknowledge the brutality of her son's death, and the sheriff said no staff member was found to have violated policy.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed; neglect alleged). The sheriff's office says his cellmate attacked him, and his family's attorney disputes whether the jail followed its policies in placing and supervising him.
Reported by: Sheriff Anthony Wickersham and the Macomb County sheriff's office (the agency that held him); his mother and family's attorney (family or their lawyers).
