Ryan Benjamin Lynady

27 years old · died July 27, 2018 · Lackawanna County Prison, Lackawanna County

Ryan Benjamin Lynady, 27, of Taylor, died at Lackawanna County Prison in Scranton on July 27, 2018, five days after he was taken into custody. The coroner, Timothy Rowland, ruled his death a suicide by hanging from a bedsheet in his cell. His mother, Lisa Loughney, who is administrator of his estate, filed a federal lawsuit saying the jail's medical provider failed to give him his prescribed suboxone or an adequate alternative, left him on a detox watch without medical care, and that he was checked less often than policy required because the jail was short-staffed. The county said it would defend itself and declined to address the allegations.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). The coroner ruled it a suicide by hanging from a bedsheet, but his mother's estate lawsuit says the jail's medical provider withheld his prescribed suboxone and left him on detox watch without medical care, and that staff checked him less often than policy required.

Reported by: Lackawanna County Coroner (medical examiner or coroner); Coroner Timothy Rowland (medical examiner or coroner); his mother's estate lawsuit (family or their lawyers).

Lawsuit: His estate, through his mother, filed a federal lawsuit alleging that the jail's medical provider withheld his prescribed suboxone and that the jail was understaffed and checked him less often than policy required, and the county said it would defend itself; no settlement or award amount has been reported.
